How to Build Trust by Letting Go of Control
Letting go of control is one of the hardest adjustments new managers face, but it's one of the most powerful things you can do for your team.
It doesn't mean being absent or disengaged. It means trusting your team enough to let them do their job.
And for new managers, that can be harder than it sounds.
What if they do it wrong?
What if the quality isn't there?
What if it reflects poorly on you?
Those are natural concerns, but when you act on them by stepping in, taking over, or redoing work, your team starts to feel like you don't trust them. And over time, their confidence and motivation will start to suffer.
Here are four ways to start building team confidence by learning to let go.
-
Give your team ownership over their work: Assign it, set the expectation, and let them take it from there. Be aware of how it is going, but resist the urge to step in if it isn't needed. When people feel like the work is truly theirs, they invest more in it.
-
Acknowledge effort, not just outcomes: Confidence grows when people feel seen. Recognizing the work someone put in, even when the result wasn't perfect, goes a long way toward building a team that is willing to try.
-
Let mistakes be learning moments, not reasons to take over: When something doesn't go as planned, resist the urge to swoop in. Instead, ask what happened, what they learned, and what they would do differently. That conversation builds far more confidence than fixing it for them.
-
Be consistent in how you show up: Trust is built over time through small, repeated actions. When your team sees that you follow through, stay calm under pressure, and have their back, their confidence in themselves and in you grows naturally.
Letting go is not a one time decision, it’s a daily practice.
The managers who do it well are not the ones who stopped caring about the work. They are the ones who shifted their focus from doing the work to developing and supporting the people who do it.
